SiteGround sucks; looking for server-mates
SiteGround doesn't give me SSH access, which means I can't debug my MediaWiki problems. Since I have a 1-year contract, I'm hoping I can sublet it. I'd sell it for $40 for the next 11 months (I paid $84 for 12 months).

[info]dachte suggests I rent out a Virtual Private Server (VPS), which means we would have complete freedom and wouldn't depend on other people for root access. Problem is it costs $20/month and up.

So I want to room with someone(s). I'm not picky, but it's a plus if you're more Unix-savvy than I am (most CMU CS majors and cluster nerds satisfy this criterion).

hmm. i would actually be into this if you could get more disk space, but given the poking around i've done, it looks like i can't actually replace the server in my living room with a VPS solution that costs less than my DSL (around $70/month). oh well.

Tetro (notapattern.net) currently has a 200GB drive and 130GB of that are in use.

That is a lot. Now wonder it's hosted in a physical machine.

Still, it seems it shouldn't cost more than, say, $40/month. Here are the costs of satisfying our needs:
* replace the machine every 5 years
* reasonably fast internet connection
* daily backup (double the disk requirements)
* electricity bills

$40/month = $480/year, which should be enough.

Is anyone looking to go into business?

yeah. i did some googling for VPS companies and it looked like they scale the machines linearly across all factors (bandwidth, disk space, RAM, number of IP addresses). so machines with just 40GB of storage are over $100/month.

notapattern is primarily a file server for myself and a few other people, so disk space is the big requirement. i don't really care about bandwidth, RAM, or any of the other stuff.

I'm now trying nearlyfreespeech.net . I like them a lot, at this early stage. I think you'd get a really good deal from them, for your 130GB.
