jogging rhythms
When I go running, my breathing follows different rhythms, the most complex of which follows a 32-beat, 8-bar pattern (4 beats-per-bar). It feels so natural, and I don't even consciously count. I think this means I'm a musical person. Do *you* follow rhythms when you work out?

Today, I felt the road pollution even more, and breathed through my mouth a bit. I need to do something about this nose of mine. My shins complained a bit: I think I need to take it easy on them.

Definitely. In fact, consciously following a rhythm is a good way of moderating your speed. I go 2 steps per inhale and then 2 steps for exhale which is what one of my running books recommends.

I do have rhythms but I don't think there's anything nearly that complex.

I think if you run at a regular pace your breathing is bound to be proportionally regular.

If your shins hurt, you may over pronate. That can be fixed by getting stable running shoes that reduce pronation. A knowledgeable athletic shoe sales person or kinesiologist can help you find the right shoe.

When I do non-mentally intensive exercise, I feel rhythms. In fact, I often have songs or parts of songs going through my head, but even when I don't there's something musical going on. Climbing, though, not so much.

me too! It's more fun, and I'm more productive when I move in rhythms. It's automating processes in my brain.

For some reason, cognitive work needs to take its time, and is much more unpredictable. Which is why I can't think deeply when I dance (or maybe that's because thinking deeply requires my whole attention).
